CRUX CORNER

K. Pandia Rajan

Business Tycoon in consultancy

Early life and education:
K. Pandia Rajan was born on 26 April 1959 in a little village near Sivakasi, Virudhunagar district called Villampatti. When Pandia Rajan was only three months old, he lost his father - a worker in a local match factory. He was brought up by his maternal grandparents in a joint family of about 40 to 50 people. He finished his schooling from the Victoria School, Sivakasi and in 1976, joined PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore for the undergraduate course in Engineering. After earning his B.E (Hons.) degree, Pandia Rajan enrolled for an MBA program in Industrial Relations at Xavier Labour Relations Institute, Jamshedpur, which he completed in 1984. During his college days, he was very active in politics and served as the students union leader.
Early career : 1984 - 1992
After graduating from XLRI in 1984, he joined the Indian operations of an industrial gas multinational - BOC Group and later, Deutsche Babcock[10]. In 1989, he married Hemalatha, a chartered accountant in his firm, who had set up a small, all women’s audit firm. Together they decided to fulfill their dream: their very own company.
Ma Foi : 1992 - till date
In 1992, with a small investment of INR 60000,he co founded Ma Foi Management Consultants along with his wife, to tap into opportunities arising out of the 1991 economic liberalization policy in India. The initial focus of Ma Foi was placing middle-level and managerial people overseas, especially in the Middle East. On choosing the French name, Ma Foi (pronounced "Ma Fwa") as the brand name, he commented in an interview - "We were targeting the international market. So, Ma Foi -- or My Word -- symbolized what we wanted to say and do." By 1994, a lot of multinational companies made their entry into India and came a recruitment services assignment from Apple Computers, which got Ma Foi to move ahead in India. During the dot-com bust at the beginning of the new millennium, Ma Foi faced some tough challenges; which were strategically solved through international alliances - a strategy he saw in American HR industry during his business visits. In 2002, Ma Foi partnered with Vedior, a Dutch headhunter firm looking to expand their operations in West Asia and South-East Asia. He sold majority of his stake to Vedior in 2004. In 2007, Dutch HR services firm - Randstad acquired the operations of Ma Foi through its $5.14 billion acquisition of Vedior. He is currently the Chairman of Randstad India. On April 5, 2012, he announced the launch of a new venture focusing on management consulting and education space - Ma Foi Strategic Consultants Pvt. Ltd, with investments of over INR 25 crore in the first three years[3]. The new company had got into an agreement with Randstad for using the brand Ma Foi for three years. Eventually, the brand would be bought over, depending on the legal approvals.
Lakshmi Niwas Mittal

As Europe’s richest man and the fifth richest on Earth, Indian-born British steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal has won many credentials for his entrepreneurial work, of which winning the financial Times’ Person of the Year in 2006 is probably the pick of the bunch. Born in Rajasthan, India, in June 1950, he started in the industry that he was eventually to dominate on a globally recognized scale by helping out in the family steel making business, alongside his father and siblings. From here, he took the steel business that the family founded in 1976 to the next level – a real turning point in the Lakshmi Mittal biography - by taking a run-down Indonesian plant and marking the beginning of the company’s international grip – the same hold that is evident in today’s world. More than 30 years on, and Mittal Steel is the largest steel making company in the world, despite the fact that Lakshmi no longer runs the business with his family, after parting ways from them in 1994.

BILL GATES

William Henry Gates was born on October 28, 1955, to a lucky couple, Williams H Gates Sr. and Marry Max Well Gates, in Seattle, Washington. No one predicted that the new born boy baby would be the world’s richest person, one day.His father was a lawyer by profession and mother served in the board of directors for First Interstate BancSystem and in the united way. Gates has got one elder sister named Kristianne and an younger sister named Libby. Earlier in his life, Gates parents had a lawyer career in mind for him. But, that, dreamwent to side lines, when he was in the 8th grade. TURNING POINT : In January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics, Gates got a clear vision of what he is going to do in future. Their magazine had demonstrated the Altair 8800 in this issue. Gates contacted the creators of Altair, the MITS, saying that, he and others are working on a BASIC interpreter for the same platform. In reality, Bill Gates and Allen did not prepare anything for the same nor had Altair with them. They were just gauging MITS’s interests. They were surprised, when MITS’s president Ed Roberts agreed to meet them for a demo. They then immediately started working on the project and within a few weeks, they designed and developed Altair emulator that ran on minicomputer and then of course, the BASIC interpreter. The very crucial demonstration of the project was held and it satisfied all including the MITS president, resulted in a deal with MITS to distribute the product as Altair BASIC. It also opened a big door for Bill Gates to become Millionaire of 1990’s and 2000’s. Paul Allen got absorbed into MITS. Bill took leave of absence from University of Harvard, and joined Paul Allen at MITS in Albuquerque during November 1975. They eventually named their partnership as “Micro-Soft” and worked together. One year later, they registered the trade name “Microsoft” (without the hyphen), with the United States Patents and Trademark Office (USPTO). Thus, a new era was born.
